What is the best tablet to use with iTree

Post by mduddy »

I have been using my iPhone 12 as the mobile collector to collect data in the field. As part of my project, I am collecting coordinate (location) data. Clicking on the map seems to be the most accurate way to collect coordinate data, but the map screen on the iPhone is very small. I am thinking a tablet would provide a more accurate way to collect coordinate data, since I'll have a larger screen to work with. So I have three related questions:

1.Do you have a recommendation for the best tablet to use in the field as a mobile collection device for iTree?
2.Would you recommend a tablet that accommodates use of a stylus, so I might be able to even more accurately touch the map to establish coordinate data?
3.Do you suggest purchasing a GPS antenna that can be plugged into the tablet, to increase coordinate accuracy? If so, do you have a recommended unit?

Many thanks.

Unfortunately, we don't have the funding or capacity to test many different tablets. As long as it has a modern web-browser and an internet connection the process should be pretty much the same and come down to user preferences. Depending on where you are working you might need something more rugged if you go with a tablet. If your tablet doesn't have a data plan you will want to make sure you test how it works when you aren't connected to wi-fi. The stylus is also a matter of user preference. You can get very accurate locations by zooming in as much as possible then using the tap on the map with or without a stylus. If you are using the tap on a map a GPS antenna won't influence the positional accuracy at all. If you decide to go to the GPS route the considerations would be similar to any other use. If you are working in highly urban setting with tall buildings GPS antennas can have issues with positional accuracy. You might want to take a look at our project reports page, https://www.itreetools.org/support/reso ... ee-reports, to see if there are other users who have done similar projects. You could contact them to get their feedback
