MyTree: calculation for total benefits this year

Post by Suzanne » Sun Mar 24, 2019 5:30 pm

Am I to understand that the MyTree "Total benefits for this year" is a year-to-date calculation? If so, why not have the calculation be on a per year basis? Why not include the date in the output label? I don't understand why it was set up this way.

Thanks, Susanne

Hi Susanne,
The benefits are meant to be representative of this calendar year (currently 2019). They aren't really per year because next year the tree will be larger and presumably providing more benefits. They also aren't to-date, but represent an estimate of the benefits as the tree grows new leaves, sheds leaves in the fall, and experiences seasonal weather and air pollution throughout the calendar year. As MyTree is meant to be a very simple and approachable tool we try to make the language as simple as possible but some of the nuance can be lost. Some of the other i-Tree tools are much more involved and can estimate benefits to date, future projected benefits, and even hourly benefits for certain stormwater and air pollution effects.
I hope this helps clarify some of that language.
Thanks for your question.
