Correct measure of tree-building distance

Post by Vackorka » Mon Dec 07, 2020 11:31 am

Dear all!

I'd like to ask for some clarification regarding the measuement of distance between tree and building.

I've found the following instructions in the latest i-Tree Eco Field Manual:

Distance to Building
Description:
Shortest distance from tree to the closest part of the building, for trees that meet the above conditions.
How to record:
Measure the shortest distance from the tree to the closest part of the building (in feet or meters).

My question is that from which part of the tree should I start the measurement. One solution would be the trunk, but my opinion it would be better if we start it from the edge of the tree crown. Cause this data is for energy saving calculation, which comes from the shading of tree crown.

So what would be the right procedure? And why?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Hello Peter,

The model is designed to to accept the measurement from the trunk of the tree.

If you want to read more about the energy model methods used in i-Tree Eco go to page 212 in this report, https://www.fs.fed.us/psw/topics/urban_ ... ufr_43.pdf.

Kind Regards, Erika
