CoolAir

Post by ValeB » Tue Jan 18, 2022 11:01 am

Good morning,

I would like to ask for some clarifications about the evaporation file and the solar radiation file needed as input to run the CoolAir model.
In particular, I would like to know if all the evaporations data asks in the file (all the columns) has to be filled with data or it can be filled only a few of them. Furthermore, in our research, we can obtain only the data for the evapotranspiration, so we are wondering if we can use a percentage of it to calculate the other evaporations.
About the Solar radiation file, we would like to know if you used calculated or observed data.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Hi ValeB,

Thank you for your interest in i-Tree Cool Air. I will answer your questions in order:

Question 1: Every column in the evaporation file (and in the solar radiation file) is required for the model to run.

Questions 2 & 3: The values in both the evaporation file and solar radiation file are calculated based on observed data from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s Integrated Surface Database (ISD) weather files. The format for NOAA raw data files can be seen here (https://www.itreetools.org/documents/94 ... xample.txt), and definitions are provided here (https://www.itreetools.org/documents/99 ... viated.txt) for abbreviations in those raw data files. The equations used to calculate evaporation and solar radiation values are written in the code for our weather preprocessing tool, available for download at https://www.itreetools.org/tools/resear ... hydro-plus under "Links" > "Weather preprocessor scripts and utility". To produce both files with all the values you need, you will likely find it simpler to use our weather preprocessor tool with a raw weather file in the NOAA format provided above. That procedure is documented in an i-Tree Support forum FAQ on Weather Data Inputs, under “Using a raw weather file”: viewtopic.php?f=35&t=1248

Hope this helps!
