total sample mileage: 3.34
number of trees in sample: 172
That gives me this population estimate of trees only for the whole city:
(51.4 x 172)/3.34 = 2,647

Neat idea!
Made me wonder if the means of submission could be simplified and thereby encouraged by using a phone app such as ODK Collect on Android and ViewWorld on iOS (using same form). Just a thought.
Unfortunately, I am unable to participate from 4K miles away...
