I'm glad somebody tried it and found it useful!

I am no expert and usually klutz around when I run into such problems--I think I tried Ctrl-click to manually exclude/include segments once in a situation like you are decribing, but I don't exactly remember since it has been a while.

Support for QGIS is through the forum: http://forum.qgis.org/index.php, and I highly recommend you register and post your question there--those people actually know what they are talking about...
Good luck.

i-Tree Streets is an Access database. Navigate to the location of your project.istreets, right click and choose "Open with" and select Microsoft Access. You will then be able to access the tables (STRATUM_MCTI_Inventory) with your inventory data and export out as an Excel sheet.

You may want to work with a copy of the project file if you are not comfortable working with Access.

Hope this helps.

It was suggested that I post this technical document link on the forum so that others can use Vue more effectively. Basically, i-Tree Vue tends to underestimate urban tree canopy because of its coarse imagery resolution. However, this application is still a good tool to use for preliminary data and community discussion. The information in this document is spelled out more clearly in the Vue User's Manual.

It has to do with statistics and the Central Limit Theorum which basically states that the more samples you have, the lower your statistical error, and the more precise your results become. I think that 200 plots in a 181 acre park is a bit much (1 plot represents less than an acre). You may want to ask yourself how many plots you can get done in a certain timeframe and then go with that. After receiving your results, you can take a look at the statistical error. If that error is too high for your liking, then put in more plots the next season until you get the error below your comfort level. The iTreetools.org website briefly explains this under Resources in the faq_UFORE document. Here is a link to a publication done in 2008 by the UFORE developers that explains in more detail.

Attached is information from the development team regarding preliminary data requirements for Hydro. The Hydro application is still in development so this will most likely be updated as progress and testing continues. The development team is shooting to have Hydro released as a beta application sometime during the Spring.

Here are the comments from the developer who tested the users image files in this case. We suspect there may have been a procedural issue causing the problem. Al

I suspect that maybe she was trying to load the images up in VUE while they were simultaneously still loaded into ArcGIS. This leads to a file sharing problem between the two applications. i.e. you wouldn’t want to open a word doc in Word for Windows and also in Wordpad at the same time.

When I do this, I get a consistent LEAD error, file not found type msg.

For the attached, per the manual:

I took her extracted areas and Right click>Exported them, to TIF and keeping the other parameters in the dialog box at their defaults.
Then I used the ArcToolBox Export Raster World File tool to create world files (*.tfw) for each export Then, in VUE, I browsed to the where the files were and opened them

They look fine, calcs seem to run ok. 1,295 acres for the area that was clipped.
Unfortunately, there is not a mechanism to allow a user to import in finer resolution imagery for analysis in Vue. Although .5 meter resolution imagery would have greater canopy detail, the Vue program is not set up for analysis at that fine a scale. In essence, the program would be analyzing canopy sections of individual trees at a very fine resolution.

Therefore, I'm not sure if that would be something that would be feasible for the future unless there was a way for the program to be adjusted to anlayze at different resolutions. I'll run it passed the developers to see if they have any further thoughts to pass along.

1. The "Short holes (<2mm)" option for Insect Signs should read "Shot holes (<2mm)"

2. Importing inventory data with species codes of identical spellings but differing cases, I.E. "BE" vs "Be" vs "bE" vs "be", results in an application crash. Workaround: Update the inventory to import using whatever case is currently used by your i-Tree Streets project and ensure a consistent case for species codes of all imported records.

Both of these issues will be corrected in i-Tree Streets 3.0.10.

Yes, you are correct. It is total tree height and it has a limit of 150ft. The Eco (UFORE) model was designed for use in urban applications so trees like redwoods, douglas firs and others in natural forests may exceed the height limit. If you have trees that exceed the limit, you can mention the actual height of the individual trees when submitting your data. The Forest Service can make manual adjustments when running your data in the model.

Hope this helps,

Eco requires much more data than species, DBH & height as you are basically giving the model canopy metrics which is how functional benefits are determined. Unfortunately, there is no simple solution or short cut. You will not be able to run reports until data is entered and then it has to be submitted and analyzed by the Forest Service. You will only have access to the sample project reports in the meantime.

Time is a major limiting factor for just about everyone considering an Eco project. If you are interested in doing a project, consider building a coalition of others who may be interested in the project and find value in the information. Despite the time and data factors, students from many countires have successfully completed projects.

Good luck.

I believe that the option to sort data by "Street" was added for the new Pest module. It will only be active when you are working with the pest symptom details. This was provided to allow users to look for similar sign & symptoms patterns in a given area but not integrated into all other reports.

The Stocking Level report will allow you to display non-tree categories. When you set these up and check non tree in the Define Species dialog box, also hit the "Stocking" button on the dialog box and add the non-tree code to the list. This will allow you to sort by your codes when running the Stocking level report. Take a look at the sample project for reference which has one code (VOID) set up for tracking potential planting sites.

I would suggest deleting unwanted trees using Input- Records. I'm not sure why you would need to delete the regional default trees as they should not appear in your outputs unless they are in the inventory. It will not let you delete them either if there are already records associated with the species codes. Hope this helps. Al

I'm sure this problem may occur on other phones/pda's so I wanted to post my successful findings to help others.
I purchased a Globalsat BT-359 Bluetooth GPS receiver unit from Amazon for $34. Yes, I (assume) a tom-tom or Garmin would work also but they're $300+. It linked easily and works wonderfully. I'm now off to practice on my college campus' trees! Yeah!
