We have been working with University of Arkansas Little Rock and with Auburn University using UFORE as a complete inventory rather than a sample inventory in small greenways or around campus. I have put together a collection of tools including a GPS data dictionary (for units running TerraSync), a formatted excel spreadsheet, a data collection sheet (if wanting to use paper and pencil), a quick-start guide to using UFORE as a complete inventory, and more. The UFORE complete inventory results will give you annual carbon storage and sequestration results, annual pollution removal (including CO, O3, NO2, PM10, and SO2) results, annual BVOC emissions, CTLA value, and leaf area and biomass info. All of this is by tree as well as for the entire area. Cut and paste the following URL or go to www.urbanforestrysouth.org and use UFORE as the keyword search. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions. Good luck with your inventory.

Here is another idea that you may want to consider. I have found that using "risk" as a criterion has helped me in determining management zones when working with inventories in park settings. This may be somewhat similar to a university campus especially if you have many land types or uses such as walkways, natural areas, patches of forest, buildings, student activity areas, parking lots, etc.

Naturally, your high-use areas will be your high-risk areas but you may also be able to monitor and compare tree health, growth, establishment, mortality and diversity as it relates to these zones. Check out the USFS publication "Community Tree Risk Management: Program Planning and Design" if you are interested in this approach. http://www.na.fs.fed.us/SPFO/pubs/uf/utrmm/chptr2.pdf

Here is another link to a study and analysis that Indiana University has available online which may help you decide how you want to determine management zones.
https://www.indiana.edu/~sustain/wp-content/uploads/internship07/documents/schmitt_report.pdf

Good luck,

Hello,

I'm not sure if you are interested in the carbon calculation methods for a specific application. So, I would suggest starting with looking over pages 8 & 9 of the UFORE methods paper http://www.itreetools.org/resource_learning_center/reports/ufore_methods.pdf, which discusses the carbon calculations for this application. Remember, UFORE has different data requirements than STRATUM such as crown metrics and crown light exposure.

The STRATUM model is based on tree DBH and height with other biomass equations and conversions calculated to determine carbon storage values. The Appendix of each Community Tree Guide http://www.fs.fed.us/psw/programs/cufr/tree_guides.php discusses the methods used in this model. If you are unable to link to these documents from this post, you can access these documents through the i-Tree Resource Learning Center Page.

As for not using metric tons as a reporting standard, both UFORE & STRATUM were conceived and developed for urban forestry applications. Both UFORE & STRATUM reports can be generated in either English or Metric values and converted manually to metric tons from kilograms or pounds. The possibility of urban forestry being viable in carbon trading markets is also a relatively new and evolving concept. So, timing may be the reason why "metric tons" was not used as the default.

Hope this helps.
Subject: Changing common names in STRATUM reports
Topic Replies: 10

Follow-up information on issue:

The problem was identified after reviewing the user’s files associated with the STRATUM project. There were (2) codes being used to identify one species in the inventory.

MA2-apple and MAHA-crabapple golden harvest were both used in the inventory to identify common crabapple trees. Therefore, when changes were made to MA2 only in the report using the “Define Species” dialog option, the change was only evident for trees coded as MA2-apple. Since, MA2 was only a minor component in the inventory (2 trees); it would not always be listed as an individual species in all the reports and would be lumped in under “BDS_other” in reports such as the distribution report.

Conversely, crabapple golden harvests MAHA was more abundant in this inventory and was listed individually in all reports causing the confusion despite making changes to MA2. Consequently, changes would need to be made to both MA2 and MAHA to rename them both “crabapple” in the reports as desired.

This problem was identified in the STRATUM_inventory table which can be found in the .mdb Access database file “[YourProjectName].mdb” associated with the STRATUM project. Changes to differing SpCodes could also be made in this table to correct species discrepancies in the reports.

For future reference, the common names are “hard coded” data which is stored in a file “[YourProjectName]SpList.xml. However, users should use the “Define Species” dialog option to make changes as desired to the species names.

Also, there were no problems identified with th NE species list or distribution reports. Problems encounterd in testing were due to changes made in climate zones.

The workbooks are for ESRI ArcGIS v9.2 users who want manual procedures for creating random, no stratification, pre-stratification and post-stratification sample points and their associated UFORE required data within a defined UFORE project area.

For those who have followed this string and offered advice, the problem turned out to be a step that was needed during configuration of the tree species list in the STRATUM/MCTI PDA application. A step was missed to "Create File for PDA's" which sends the revised list to the PDA. The problem was identified over the phone. Thanks to all for helping! Al

Hello,

I think that you understand how it works but see if this helps clarify the picture.

As mentioned in a previous reply to RT, each STRATUM region has approximately 200 trees that are most likely to be found in that region. However, those 200 trees do not all have individual benefits and growth calculations available. So, the species value assignment is used as a mechanism to assign benefit and growth values to those trees that do not have actual data available. Therefore, the species value SppValue Assignment relationship would be the value that actually drives the STRATUM benefit and growth outputs. However, the species code is needed to create the relationship with the allied species used in the Spp Value Assignment.

Here is a hypothetical example of how one may decide to change the SppValue Assignment for an individual tree to reflect local conditions. The Midwest region has Sweetgum tree listed with a SppValue assignment as (BDL) Broadleaf large tree. However, if I am in the upper Midwest using STRATUM, I may decide to change the SppValue assignment for that tree to Broad leaf medium (BDM) as this tree may not grow as large as in southern parts of the Midwest region. So, the species code would stay the same in STRATUM but changing the species value assignment could be used to capture local knowledge and refine outputs.
On my young bur oak trees I have seen easily a 50% increase in primary growth this summer, and even more on truly indeterminate species like hackberry or poplar. But I have no idea what that says about older trees, or secondary growth, or root mass.

Hi Alanna,
Just to be clear, are you referring to the tree calculator located at http://www.itreetools.org/treecalculator/ ? This calculator is currently in beta and is only operational for the Coastal Plains climate zone. There are plans to expand functionality to include all STRATUM climate zones, but this will not include any new calculations for the cumulative effects of multiple trees at any single site.

As Al describes above, the Tree Calculator is intended to be a very simplistic model based on average street tree performance across an entire city. As such, it is intended to be a first order approximation without accounting for the detailed geography or metrics of individual trees and their location. --Scott
